Ilex guayusa
Guayusa leaves - Caffeine is the major constiuent of the Ilex genus and this rare species is the source of the famous stimulating drink Guayusa. In the jungle Guayusa is used as a strengthening morning stimulant and emetic cleanser. The leaves are sometimes brewed in alliance with yaje and have been discovered in buriel sites with snuff and enema paraphernalia indicating ancient use. Guayusa leaves are dried and strung together in packets, which are then strung together to form large wreaths. Throughout the Amazon these wreaths can be seen hanging outside local tiendas.

A Note About Cordials

The word cordial was originally associated with medicine, and its’ Latin derivation is from cor which translates to heart. The first recorded use of the word in English is from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales where it seemed to indicate a medicinal drink. Such cordials brought beneficial effects to the user by stimulating the heart. According to our knowledge of medieval physiology the heart was considered the center of ones feelings, thus the adjective cordial which means “hearty” or “heartfelt” arose.

Nymphaea caerulea Sacred Blue Lily of the Nile
Exceptionally well-Known in mythology and art of some Egyptian, Indian, Chinese and Mayan cultures. Traditionally used to alleviate pain and increase memory and circulation. Turnera diffusa var. aphrodisiaca Damiana
Famous herb of Central America, particularly well-known for its nervine and aphrodisiac properties. Can be safely smoked either by itself or in combination with other good smoking herbs. Is often sold in Mexico as an aphrodisiac elixir. We offer Damiana here with a recipe for another delicious cordial (liqueur).
