Estrogen Levels and Women

Estrogen is the principal female sex hormone. It is conceived from a series of compounds namely, estrone, estriol and estradiol. The hormone is essentially responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle. In addition, adequate presence of this sex hormone works towards the proper development of the secondary sex characteristics of women. These characteristics particularly define the disparities in the appearance among men and women. Some of these secondary features include wide pelvis, breasts, more fat around the buttocks, thighs and hip region. It also contributes towards the development of facial hair and smoother skin among women.  As per the experts, sufficient presence of estrogen is imperative for the smooth functioning of the reproductive system. Certain percentage of this female sex hormone is also present among males. However, their percentage is considerably less in comparison to estrogen presence among women. The hormone is mainly produced in the ovaries by the corpus luteum and the placenta. However, other organs like breasts, liver and adrenal glands are also responsible for producing certain percentage of this hormone in the body. Certain percentage is though requisite for the normal growth of women’s reproductive system, an increased presence imposes the danger of breast cancer among women.
