The Genus Acacia - Leguminosae: Evergreen shrubs and trees native to Australia where they are affectionately known as the Wattles. Acacias can grow to magnificent heights, are quite ravishing when mature and often develop strong, statuesque trunks.

Known as trees of fertility and sometimes associated with the making of rain. The species listed are important additions for collectors interested in tryptamine alkaloids. Acacia seeds are easy to germinate and grow. Soak the seed in hot water at least a few hours prior to sowing.

Camellia sinensis - Green Tea
A wonderful herbal stimulant with so many medicinal qualities. Tea is currently cultivated over most of East Asia, with many varieties and methods of preparation. The dense, round shrubs can grow to 15’, though are usually pruned shorter to make hand picking of the dark green, leathery leaves easier. Tea consumption dates back to time immemorial, but where did tea come from? Myth has it that there was once a Buddhist priest who traveled extensively spreading his religion. Greatly worried by the real threat of sleep at night, he cut off his eyelids and threw them away. From these eyelids grew the stimulating tea bush. However, scholars say it was Bodhidharma who came from India to China, bringing esoteric Buddhism, who ‘founded tea’. Tea, like coffee, contains caffeine and has the ability to keep one alert and awake, excite mental processes and stimulate clear thought. Tea thrives best with humid conditions and strong, healthy plants may be harvested the third year. Seed must be refrigerated.

A Word (or two) About The Genus Acorus - Acoraceae
Until quite recently these plants were considered to be in the Araceae family. We only knew of Acorus calamus, an attractive plant with a fine reputation in both the Old and New worlds. According to new documentation, there are actually two distinct species of the plant we have been referring to as Acorus calamus (plus a few varieties of these species).

The North American native grass is classified and accepted as Acorus americanus, while the European species is considered the true Acorus calamus. Of interest is the fact  that there is actually more of the introduced European species growing in the U.S. at this time. In some states the native species is endangered. All the more reason to seriously grow a lot of it to re-introduce.

There has been a lot of controversy around the different qualities and effects the two species produce. Acorus americanus has stimulant properties, while Acorus calamus is a narcotic and not considered by some to be safe to use. Unfortunately calamus has been misunderstood and some of the general public is afraid to use it. It would take a whole lot of the true Acorus calamus to really be harmful. That's the story in a nutshell. The forthcoming book Cultivating Allies speaks extensively about these issues.

We offer both seeds and plants of Acorus americanus as a safe medicinal to grow and use. In the future we will probably have enough Acorus calamus to offer also.

Acorus americanus - Acoraceae - Calamus Root - Sweet Flag
A very important plant with an extensive history in North American native life. It is considered a smoke plant and mixed with tobacco for headaches and often used externally as a poultice. Graceful, semi-aquatic perennial with deep green, ginger scented, iris-like foliage. This is the true North American Native species.

Latin Names - The offerings in this section are listed with their Latin name first so that you may become familiar with them, followed by the plant family (Solanaceae, Labiatae etc.) they belong to. The great folk names are from the regions of their origin. Perhaps you will start recognizing plant families, genera and species. It can be quite helpful when trying to identify or locate a particular plant as plant classification is a universal language.

You may also like to understand the hierarchy of the botanical kingdom. At the top are the plant families such as the Solanaceae family that we often refer to. Nicotiana is a genus of the Solanaceae family, and alata and bigelovii are species. Once you understand the basic concept, it becomes much easier to remember. However, at  times the family names change according to new documentation which can be confusing.
