The great and controversial Nicotiana is a very important genus in the botanical world with at least 60 species. It is passionately known as a giver & taker of life and considered quite sacred. Because Nicotiana is such an integral part of so many peoples lives globally, there are literally volumes written about its rich history of collection,  preparation, mythology & special cultivation.

Nicotiana alata - Jasmine Scented
Native to Peru. A fine species with thick & velvety, deep green leaves forming an attractive rosette. Flowers are characteristically trumpet -shaped, generally white or pink though sometimes purple. During warm summer evenings we always lead our guests on an intoxicating stroll through the end of the garden where these jasmine scented allies dwell. Cold & drought tolerant perennial. Although this species may be smoked, it is really more of an exotic horticultural showpiece when flowering.

Nicotiana attenuata - Coyote sp.
An annual species of the Northern Blackfoot, who say the smoke is the Great Spirits breath taking prayers to the Ones Above. California native that seems to be as elusive as the coyote itself in Native American mythology. Reported that the Tubatulabals of Kern County sucker the plants of Nicotiana attenuata with those of Nicotiana bigelovii harvesting the leaves and sweating them in bundles of willow, then crushing with lime & molding into cakes. Earthy odor, mild but good tasting. Grows well on burn sites.

Nicotiana bigelovii - Arareeheeraha
A very potent, compact annual. Native to the Western U.S., particularly California where it grows wild along river banks and stream beds. It is reported that it has been the preference to cultivate these plants in special gardens rather than use the wild material. It is also our understanding that many of the healers using this species are women who hold the longest pipes. Smoking is done in ceremony to get into ones power. Must have good light, heat and adequate drainage to mature properly.

Nicotiana glauca - Tree sp.
Unique old, but rarely cultivated perennial. Contains anabasine rather than nicotine and is considered a good smoke. Tree-like in growth with large, thick blue-green leaves that are poisonous to horses, sheep & cattle. Often seen growing wild in Southern California.

  Growing Tip - Sow seed indoors to get an early start on large plants. Place seed on soil surface & tamp a bit. Keep moist, warm & well lit. Fertilize with organic vegetable matter & ash to produce a  pleasant tasting smoke.  
 
Nicotiana rustica var. kessu
Very interesting plant. A short lived, stout variety from Finland close to the Arctic Circle. Strong in alkaloids and appearance. Extremely cold hardy.

Nicotiana sylvestris
Very large, perennial species (though there are some small horticultural varieties). The huge leaves sometimes measure a foot in width and make terrific gifts or offerings. The pure white, long, pendulous flowers form many clusters and emit a wonderful spicy scent after dark and into the early morning. Good smoking material!

Nicotiana tabacum Rosa
Favored in the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico. These seeds were originally collected from Mazatec mountain gardens. Dried leaves are smoked and also powdered for external use as a form of protection. Beautiful large, perennial plant to 6 with long leaves & rose colored flowers.
